Ever think that the world isn’t quite what it seems? If so, this speculative documentary is the red pill you have been waiting for.
Forget about asking whether a tree makes a sound when it falls alone in a forest; instead ponder the idea that the forest might not even exist. At least, that’s the ground that Rodney Ascher covers when he interviews subjects who believe that our reality is a construct. Seen via a screen, these interviewees initially sound madcap, but Ascher’s enthusiasm for immersing us into their alternative world scenarios is, at the very least, entertaining. It’s unsurprising, considering Ascher was the filmmaker who drew out a myriad of conspiracy theories about The Shining for his engaging 2012 documentary Room 237. Here, his subjects edge towards darker territory and, in this age of QAnon, all things fake and Majorie Taylor Greene, A Glitch in the Matrix plays like an alternate reality outlier.
